It was a marvel of engineering. When it came time to go to work, a whole new work force marched onto the assembly line. There on opening day was a crew of 150 industrial robots. Industrial robots don't look anything like the androids from sci-fi books and movies. They don't act like the evil Daleks or a fusspot C-3P0. If anything, the industrial robots toiling on the Chrysler line resemble elegant swans or baby brontosauruses with their fat, squat bodies, long arched necks and small heads. An industrial robot is essentially a long manipulator arm that holds tools such as welding guns or motorized screwdrivers or grippers for picking up objects. The robots working at Chrysler and in numerous other modern factories are extremely adept at performing highly specialized tasks - one robot may spray ! paint car parts while another does spots welds while another pours radioactive chemicals. Robots are ideal workers: they never get bored and they work around the clock. What's even more important, they're flexible. Fitting in with the people of society can seem to Essays - Fiction Fitting in with the people of society can seem to be the biggest challenge in life. In William Carlos Williams's works "The Dark Day" and "The Late Singer" the ideas of loneliness and not fitting in with society are both explored. Though the topics of the poems vary slightly, the reader can still grasp the ideas of how the speaker in each poem feels isolated from society and detached from those around him. Williams uses the devices of vivid imagery, syntax, repetition and specific diction throughout both poems in order to show the reader how the speaker in each poem feels towards society. In "The Dark Day", Williams uses various techniques in order to show how the speaker feels isolated and detached from society. Williams utilizes vivid imagery in order to show the reader how the speaker feels in regards to the people surrounding him. Williams describes the people walking by as "drawn in upon themselves" (Williams l. 7) and "hurry from one place to another" (Williams l. 8). By describing the way the people are passing by him and not paying attention to him, Williams is furthering the feeling of isolation and detachment of the speaker in the poem. It's as if the speaker is just sitting and watching life pass by without being able to do anything about it. Williams also uses a lot of repetition throughout the poem in order to show how stuck the speaker is in time and again the isolation he is feeling. Williams uses repetition when describing the people talking around the speaker and the never-ending feeling the talking gives him. Even though all this talking is o ccurring around him, the speaker still feels isolated from everyone and can't move forward. Williams also uses repetition at the very end of the poem when he says "backward, backward, backward" (Williams l.12). By using the repetition in this line, Williams is again showing how the speaker feels stuck in time and detached from those around him. Without the repetition, the reader wouldn't understand how the speaker feels stuck and unmoving, while those around him continue on with their lives. Williams also utilizes the device of syntax and varies the length of sentences throughout the poem in order to emphasize the feeling of isolation from society and how cut off they are from others. Williams uses much shorter sentences halfway through the poem when he says "Warm. Distance cut off. Seclusion" (Williams l.6). By altering the length of the sentences so drastically, the reader gets a better idea of how truly alone the speaker feels. Just like the sentences seem cut off and short, the speaker also feels cut off and distanced from society. Williams also utilizes specific diction in order to further develop the speaker's isolation and detachedness from society. Williams uses words like "seclusion", "interminable" and "no escape", in order to show how the speaker feels like there is no way to get away from the isolation he is experiencing. Without these specific word choices, the reader may not grasp how hopeless the speaker feels and the feelings of isolation and detachedness are never-ending. Lastly, Williams uses a tone of loneliness and hopelessness in order to drive home the isolation the speaker is feeling. The word choices Williams uses such as "secluded" and "no escape" help to exemplify the tone he is trying to utilize and further show the reader how the speaker feels. In "The Late Singer", Williams uses similar devices that were utilized in "The Dark Day" in order to show the reader that the speaker feels as though he doesn't fit in with the rest of society. By not fitting in, the speaker feels similar to how the speaker in "The Dark Day" felt, because both feel isolated from society just for different reasons. Williams also shows the reader that the speaker feels pressured by society to grow up faster and again this makes him feel as though he doesn't fit in with everyone else. Williams utilizes vivid imagery, just as he did in "The Dark Day", by describing scenes of nature in vivid detail. Before getting to far ahead, it is important to make sure that there is a valid understanding of what affirmative action actually is, and what its policies stand for. What is affirmative action? Affirmative action means that steps are taken to help increase the representation of women, and other minorities in areas like education, employment, and business. These are all areas from which they have typically and historically been excluded. It is when these steps involve preferential treatment or selection based on gender, race, and ethnicity then the concept of affirmative action becomes controversial (Affirmative Action, 2001). History of affirmative action In 1961, then President John F. Kennedy issued executive order 10925 against American Lexicon. The order gave the first mention of affirmative action.  The purpose of the order was to end discrimination within the business (Nittle, n.d.). Next, three years later in 1964, The Civil Right Act came out. The goal of the Civil Right Act of 1964 was to stop employment and public accommodations discrimination (Nittle, n.d.). Following the Civil Right Act of 1964, President Lyndon Johnson, who took office after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, issued executive order 11246. This order required federal contractors to practice affirmative action, to help develop diversity within the workplace and help end race based discrimination, and other forms of discrimination (Nittle, n.d.). Before these amendments were signed into action, you had other key events that took place as well. For example, the case of Brown v Board of Education. This case was about an African American girl who wanted to attend a white public school, and was denied admittance. This case helped overturn a prior case Plessy v Ferguson. Plessy v Ferguson stated that a separate but equal America was constitutional (Nittle, n.d.). Brown v Board overturned that case by ruling that discrimination is a key aspect of racial segregation. Which meant that it violated the 14th Amendment (Nittle, n.d.). This decision started the countries goal to promote diversity in schools and various other places (Nittle, n.d.). This was a very important legal, as well as ethical case. It helped kick start the changes to peoples thought processes. Why affirmative action? Now that a bit of history on affirmative action has been covered, it is important to look at why affirmative action policies should be put into action at your company. Affirmative action would be very beneficial to your company for many reasons. It allows for a more diversified workplace, it is a way to allow all races to have equal rights, it shows that everyone has the ability to be great at their job, that people can be more productive by sharing various thoughts, plans, and ideas for the betterment of not only the company, but themselves as well, regardless of their gender, race, or ethnicity. This company should hire people based on things like their level of experience and skill, and whether they have the aspects necessary for that  position. The hiring process should not be based on the persons racial or ethnic background, or whether they are a male or a female. People should be comfortable enough that when they apply for a position within your company they do not worry about whether or not they are being discriminated against. All that should matter is that they have the skills necessary to do the job to the best of their ability. Not whether or not they are the proper gender or if they are the right ethnicity. If someone applies for a job at your company, and they feel they may have been discriminated against, and then they ask you about it, if you dont give them a reasonable response or answer them correctly it can cause problems for the company. Whether it be through long bitter court battles, or just the company gains a bad name for even potentially being prejudiced or biased. Employment discrimination against women and minorities is something that has gone on for a very long time. Government reports show that the pay, as well as job opportunities for minorities is smaller than that of white or Caucasian ethnicity ( Bohlander Snell, 2007). If your company implements affirmative action, it can be beneficial from the outside and inside as well. One thing that needs to be done to begin the action, is to develop a plan. Your company needs to have a written statement showing commitment to the idea of affirmative action. You should look at where the company stands in terms of women and minorities that you have employed. By doing so, it will allow for you to see where changes, if any, need to be made. Once you see where the improvements and changes are, you need to take the right steps to make sure these changes are made. While making these changes, you have to make sure that no other race or gender within your employee base was mistreated, or undervalued in any way due to the affirmative action plan. Equal employment opportunity law According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Law, all businesses have an obligation to uphold. They are not to judge a potential employee based on ones race, gender, age, etc. This is a very important aspect of affirmative action. You have to make sure that your company understands and follows the  policy ( Bohlander Snell, 2007). The court system is always interpreting the employment law. If changes are made, then it is the manager of your companys responsibility to change the companys employment guidelines to follow the court ruling (Bohlander Snell, 2007). To help make sure that business do comply with the changes, and anti discrimination laws, the Equal Employment Opportunities Council was established to monitor that the guidelines are being followed (Bohlander Snell, 2007). Benefits of affirmative action There are many benefits for your company to implementing an affirmative action plan. The employees themselves will benefit for instance, because minorities that are employed within your company have the chance to advance up the career ladder, and gain opportunities for promotions that they may not have had a chance of getting before. Your company shouldnt be made up of one race, one ethnicity, or one gender because you think that one is better than the other. If a person has or gets a job, it should be due to their qualifications and abilities to do the job correctly. Not based on race or gender. The downfalls of affirmative action With almost any argument in favor of something, you are going to have opinions refuting the ideas. Some believe that affirmative action leads to reverse discrimination. That instead of being hired for their qualifications and skill, that they are hired based on religion, race, gender, etc. Opponents feel that it can make people turn against one another. Preventing the downfalls of affirmative action The cons of affirmative action can be avoided as long as your company takes the proper steps. The company needs to look for the best people for the unfilled positions, and do the proper training if needed. To help prevent your employees from feeling as if the only reason they got the job with your company was due to their gender or race, make sure that you let them know they were hired because they had the needed experience or qualifications and therefore they were the best match. It is important to make sure that your company sticks to the plan that was laid out in the beginning, to the affirmative action plan that was developed. You watch over all of your employees, and not just those who are impacted more by the plan, the work environment at your company should stay sustainable and comfortable for all employees. Conclusion Affirmative action would be a great idea for your company. The purpose of this presentation was to show both the pros and the cons of implementing affirmative action within your company, which is hopefully what was done. The main thing to remember here is that the benefits to implementing affirmative action, strongly outweigh the pitfalls. Also, the opposition to the plan can be avoided by following your action plan, and the steps provided for avoidance of those downfalls. It is hoped that you will choose to use the affirmative action policy within your company, as it is something that will most definitely help and payoff in your companys future. Marner was once a well respected member of a community in a northern district town called Lantern Yard. But after everyone thinking he had been possessed by Satan, a string of events took place where he lost everything he ever valued. Marner was a very religious man and a devote Christian. He was always socialising and very much part of the society. He was forever in the church and gave everything he had to them. An example for this is shown on page 14. â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Marner was highly thought of in that little hidden world known to itself as a church.† This showed that people thought a lot of him and was an extremely popular guy. He had many friends, but one special one who he relied upon for everything. His name was William Dane. He was also in a loving relationship with his fiancà ©e Sarah. After Silas was framed for the theft of the church money, by his so called friend William Dane, he becomes a complete social outcast. At first he thinks God will clear him, but this hope turned into misery when his religious community casts him out. His faith in god is completely lost. Sarah breaks up with him and soon marries William Dane. This makes him realise he can not trust man either. This is shown on page 20, â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.Poor Marner went out with that despair in his soul- That shaken trust in God and man, which is a little short of madness to... ... isolated outcast, to a suspicious foreigner and now a well respected member of his society. Marner’s main priority is Eppie. This is shown when the money is handed back to him and he says â€Å"†¦.it takes no hold of me now.† This shows all of his love is concentrated on Eppie. His life has had many ups and downs but he has got on with it and in the end has become a much stronger person, with his faith in God and man restored. This is shown when he says, â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Since the time the child was sent to me and I’ve come to love her as myself, I’ve had light enough to trusten by, and now she says she’ll never leave me, I think I shall trusten till I die.† This puts his mind at ease that he will always have someone to love who will love him back. All of these events have shown that Marner’s life has changed dramatically to make him a much stronger, reliable person.

Responsibilities: The Production Managers, Lab Technician, Factory workers and Sales Distributors should be responsible for coordinating and implementing the Cassava Processing Factory and product sales tasks.The Production Manager is responsible for training and managing the Factory Workers, Supervisors, Lab Techs etc; Production Manager should supp ort the objectives policies of the Company and provide input to further development of SOPs. He/she would be responsible for planning, organizing, supervising and managing the activities of the entire factory and the routine maintenance of all factory equipment. Factory Workers are expected to discharge their duties efficiently and in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures, work manual and equipment manual provided. The Standard Operating Procedures 1. 0 Cassava processing Cassava processing aims at increasing the quality and storability of cassava tubers.This enhances the ability of the farmers to develop additional products, such as baking products out of cassava flour. It further ensures reduction or total elimination of undesirable toxic constituents in cassava so that it is suitable for human consumption. A. Producing Cassava Flour and Chips: I. Using low-cyanide varieties – Freshly harvested cassava is peeled using a knife. The peeled cassava is then washed a nd sliced into smaller pieces (chips). These are then dried on a raised platform under direct sun for about 2 days or specially-made driers, until moisture content of about 8 to 10 % is reached. Properly dried chips become tough to break, but crumble into flour when hit with a hard item like a hammer.The drying process should be done continuously and the drying chips should not be exposed again to water to avoid molding. The chips may then be ground or milled into flour; dried chips store better than flour. II. Using high-cyanide varieties – Freshly uprooted cassava are peeled and sliced into smaller pieces (chips). The sliced chips are then dried in the sun for about 3 days to about 14 % moisture content. The chips are then soaked in water for 8 hours, and dried again to a moisture content of about 8 %. B. Producing Gari – Fermented cassava dough: Gari is a creamy-white or yellow dried cassava product, common in West Africa. It is prepared by peeling the outside of th e tuber skin and washed. The washed tubers are then grated using a grater.It is then packed in bags with holes to drain off the liquid and left to ferment for 1 to 5 days, depending on the preferred flavour. The fermented material is then pressed to let out the extra water leaving a cassava cake. The remaining cake is broken loose and spread on frying metal trays above a fire. The particles are fried until crisp and dry, about 10 % moisture content. The gari is then cooled, sieved and packed for sale or storage. C. Cassava Starch extraction After washing and peeling, roots are grated to release starch granules. The â€Å"starch milk† – water containing suspended granules then, separated from the pulp, after which the granules are separated from the water by sedimentation or in a centrifuge.At that point, the starch requires solar or artificial drying to remove moisture before being milled, sieved and packed. In artisanal production systems, daily starch output ranges f rom 50 to 60 kg of starch per worker, while semi-mechanized processing can yield up to 10 tonnes a day. In modern, fully mechanized starch extraction plants, daily output is as high as 150 tonnes. Cassava Processing Equipment I. Traditional cassava processing does not require sophisticated equipment. Processing cassava into gari requires equipment such as grater, presser and fryer. The traditional cassava grater is made of flattened kerosene tin or iron sheet perforated with nails and fastened onto a wooden board with handles.Grating is done by rubbing the peeled roots against the rough perforated surface of the iron sheet which tears off the peeled cassava root flesh into mash. In recent years, various attempts have been made to improve graters. Graters which are belt-driven from a static 5 HP Lister type engine have been developed and are being extensively used in Nigeria. Its capacity to grate cassava is about one ton of fresh peeled roots per hour. II. For draining excess liquid from the grated pulp the sacks containing the grated pulpy mass are slowly pressed down using a 30-ton hydraulic jack press with wooden platforms, before sieving and roasting into gari. Stones are used in traditional processing to press out the excess moisture from the grated pulp.Tied wooden frames are used for this purpose in places where stones are not available. Pans made from iron or earthen pots are used for roasting the fermented pulp. Fuel wood is the mad or source of energy for boiling, roasting, steaming and frying. Fuel wood may not be easily and cheaply obtained in the future because of rapid deforestation. III. Slight changes in the equipment used in processing can help to save fuel and lessen the discomfort, health hazard, and drudgery for the operating women. The economic success of any future commercial development of cassava processing would depend upon the adaptability of each processing stage to mechanization.However, the first step to take for improvement of cas sava technologies should be to improve or modify the simple processing equipment or systems presently used, rather than to change entirely to new, sophisticated, and expensive equipment. Storage of cassava processed products Processing, particularly drying and roasting, increases shelf life of cassava products. Good storage depends on the moisture content of the products and temperature and relative humidity of the storage environment. The moisture content of gari for safe storage is belong 12. 7%. When temperature and relative humidity are above 27 °C and 70% respectively, gari goes bad (Igbeka 1987). The type of bag used for packing also affects shelf life depending on the ability of the material to maintain safe product moisture levels.Jute and hessian bags are recommended in dry cool environments because they allow good ventilation (Igbeka 1987). When gari, dried pulp and flour are well dried and properly packed, they can be stored without loss of quality for over one year. Dr ied cassava balls (â€Å"kumkum†) can be stored for up to 2 years (Numfor end Ay 1987). â€Å"Chickwangue†, â€Å"Myondo† and â€Å"Bobolo† can be preserved for up to 1 week but they can be kept for several more days when recooked. Cassava leaves as vegetable I. Cassava shoots of 30 cm length (measured from the apex) are harvested from the plants. The hard petioles are removed and the blades and young petioles are pounded with a pestle in a mortar.A variation of this process involves blanching the leaves before pounding. The resulting pulp is then boded for about 30-60 minutes. In some countries, the first boiled water is decanted and replaced. Pepper, palm-oil and other aromatic ingredients are added. The mixture is then boiled for 30 minutes (Numfor and Ay 1987). Unlike the roots that are essentially carbohydrate, cassava leaves are a good source of protein and vitamins which can provide a valuable supplement to predominantly starchy diets. Cassava leav es are rich in protein, calcium, iron and vitamins, comparing favorably with other green vegetables generally regarded as good protein sources.The amino acid composition of cassava leaves shows that, except for methionine, the essential amino acid values in cassava exceed those of the FAO reference protein (Lancaster and Brooks 1983). II. The total essential amino acid content for cassava leaf protein is similar to that found in hen's egg and is greater than that in oat and rice grain, soybean seed, and spinach leaf (Yeoh and Chew 1976). Analytical and Sequential Learning. The student learns through a step-by-step method. He works out a problem in stages. He uses logic in his initial analysis as he looks at every single angle of the equation like in Algebra. He does it in sequence. He is very detailed and has to understand the problem right from the start, before he moves on to the next step. A Power Point Presentation will not work out with the Analytical and Sequential learner because of his attachment to details. He is not likely to appreciate and learn from a very generalized and summarized presentation. He would rather finish with the first step only when he has fully understood it before he will move to the next step. 2. Visual Learning. In this style, the student learns from what he sees. His focus is primarily on the visual aspects of the method like written words and figures, colorful designs and charts. He has to see things first before he understands them through other means or medium. It would be slightly difficult for him to understand a lecture in itself without some sort of illustration of the lessons. A Power Point Presentation will appeal to the Visual type of learner because of the pictures and figures in it, for him to digest the lesson further and easier. 3. Auditory Learning. Auditory learners are those who assimilate things through what they see. They learn best from oral lectures and verbal discussion. They are not distracted by sounds, like music, when studying. They understand directions better when these are given verbally. They are adept at grammar and foreign language skills mostly from just listening. Power Point Presentations may be partly effective only because of the sound effects that jolt them into attention, before they can be expected to absorb the written part of the presentation. The Auditory learners are on the slow side with visuals and written concepts. 4. Kinesthetic Learning. His early work depicts humble subjects, peasants mostly, with a gentle hand. During the time he worked for his uncle, van Gogh realized that a business career did not suit him. In 1878, van Gogh applied for admission into a theological school, but was sternly rejected. Van Gogh then decided to become a preacher. He acquired his training from a missionary society in Brussels, Belgium. Late in 1878, van Gogh represented the society as a minister to the extremely poor coal miners in the Borinage, a poor district in Belgium. Whitmans most celebrated work, Leaves of Grass, was the only book he ever wrote, and he took a lifetime to write it. A large assortment of poems, it is one of the most widely criticized works in literature, and one of the most loved works as well. Whitman was unmarried and childless, and it has been noted that Leaves of Grass consumed him greatly; James E. Miller Jr. writes: he guided his poetic offspring through an uncertain, hesitant childhood, a lusty young manhood, and a serene old ageit is difficult to write the life of Whitman without writing instead of the life and times of his bookWhitman was the kind of parent who lives his life through his child. (Miller 15) The poetic offspring that Miller writes of is of course Leaves of Grass. Whitman poured his soul into the work, as he questioned himself and observed his demeanor through his writing. He fathered the tome, as after its initial publishing Whitman went on to release revision after revision as time progressed. Miller goes on to reflect on Whitmans methods, as he tells the reader of Whitmans curiosity towards life, particularly curious about his own meaning in the world in which he lived. Like any individual of depth and complexity, Whitman was continuously curious about who he was(he had) a lusty enthusiasm, a hearty relish for life lived at all times to its fullest intensity. (Miller 17) The life Whitman lived to its fullest intensity started in West Hills, Long Island, May 31, 1819. He was one of nine children to Walter and Louisa Whitman, his father a farmer and his mother a devout Quaker. Quakerism was the only religious inheritance the Perez 2 family passed on to Walt, and, as Miller notes, could also be seen later in his famous sea-poem. Out of the cradle endlessly rocking, Out of the mocking-birds throat, the musical shuttle, Out of the Ninth-month midnight Passage to more than India! Of secret of the earth and sky! Of you o waters of the sea! O winding creeks and rivers! O day and night, passage to you! (Whitman 180-294) His use of thee and thou in his poetry, his reference to the months by their sequential number (ninth month for September), and his instinctive adoption of the inner lightall of these Walt could trace back to his Quaker background. (Miller 17) This Quakerism also contributed to the style of Leaves, told with certain closeness and a certain emphasis paralleling that of a preacher. Miller comments on this style: His was a day of evangelism and oratory. As a child he was no doubt frequently exposed to both. The passionate intimacy and pleading of many lines in Leaves of Grass couldhave been used by an itinerant preacher (Miller 43) Aside from his Quaker traces, Leaves of Grass has been criticized as being an extension of Whitmans life. Just as Miller described the work as Whitmans child, John Kinnaird comments on the great level of importance at which Whitman held his masterpiece: Leaves of Grass suggests so much of the original existential Whitman that criticism must continue to recover and understand, particularly since this is the first poet who ever insisted that his book was in reality no book. (Kinnaird 24) Kinnaird reinforces the criticism of Miller Jr. as he emphasizes the autobiographical and introspective nature of Leaves. It seems that Whitman used this work as a release, and Perez 3 had a marvelous interpretation of life in general. He also had a unique estimation of poetry itself. In his introduction to Leaves of Grass he writes: The power to destroy or remold, is freely used by him (the greatest poet) but never the power of attack. What is past is past. If he does not expose superior models and prove himself by every step he takes he is not what is wanted.
